Dental health and the body
The mouth is not a closed space.
Chronic bacterial inflammation in the mouth – such as caries and periodontitis – can lead to more than the loss of teeth. Harmful bacteria that spread through the blood into the whole body can also raise the risk of a heart attack or a stroke and have a negative effect on metabolic diseases such as diabetes. There are also striking connections between bacterial inflammation in the mouth during pregnancy and underweight premature births
In periodontitis – the chronic inflammation of the structures supporting the teeth – bacteria settle in the spaces between the teeth and in the gum pockets. They give off toxic substances that attack those supporting structures. Our immune system responds in order to destroy the bacteria. At the same time, inflammatory substances can enter the bloodstream. One possible consequence: further inflammation throughout the body. So the rule is: prevent disease in the mouth in good time, or treat it early
