Tongue scrapers and brushes

A large part of the bacteria in the mouth sits on the tongue.

Cleaning the tongue likewise serves to reduce the bacteria that settle in the countless micro-niches of the tongue's surface and cause cleaned interdental spaces to be recolonised quickly. To avoid bad breath, the tongue should be cleaned daily with special little brushes and scrapers. Cleaning the tongue is more than a purely cosmetic measure for pleasant, fresh breath. The micro-niches of the tongue's surface offer bacteria ideal conditions and thus increase the danger of the teeth being colonised again. Tongue cleaning reduces the number of bacteria and germs in the mouth, as the tongue and the insides of the cheeks are cleaned. In scientific circles the coating on the tongue is classed as harmful to oral health. It is regarded as the main cause of bad breath (halitosis), caused by bacterial decomposition

Why clean the tongue?

The surface of the tongue is like skin. Dead cells and bacteria have to be removed so that it can revitalise itself. As a rule it is the bacteria on the tongue that cause troublesome bad breath. Concerns that regular tongue cleaning might lead to histological changes in the tongue's epithelium have not been confirmed by scientific studies. Food tastes better with a "clean" tongue, because the taste receptors distributed across it become more sensitive. Regular tongue cleaning leads to a marked improvement in the sense of taste, especially in older patients
